Summer is officially in full swing here in The County and with that comes lots of fun events to check out. Whether you’re interested in food, drinks, art, music, or all of the above, Prince Edward County has got you covered. Some of our favourite PEC events are returning for yet another year and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for this summer.
When you’re ready to take a break from wine tastings, here are some of the top summer events in The County that you should check out:
No summer weekend is complete without a trip to the Wellington Farmers’ Market – we know, because had a booth on opening weekend in May! In between chatting with people at our booth, we bought fresh bread, some of Jamie Kennedy’s famous fries, wood oven-fired pizza, and we shopped for antiques and handmade clothing. Come by to shop for local food and preserves, art, furniture, and crafts every Saturday until Thanksgiving weekend, starting at 8 AM. It’s the perfect opportunity to support local businesses and enjoy some live music by local musicians too – plus, Charles and Camilla are stopping by on Canada Day – so it’s Royal-approved!
Prince Edward County’s annual Art in the County exhibition is now in its 24th year. Showing off some of the amazing talent we have here in The County, stop by to admire (or purchase!) works created by local artists. This year the exhibition runs from June 23rd to July 9th at Books & Company in Picton and will have a wide range of art on display including watercolour and acrylic paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and glasswork. Free admission on Canada Day this year (and we heard there will be cake). If you’re an art-lover there are lots of amazing galleries in the area, including Side Street Gallery in Wellington, where we recently had some of our art framed.
Our beautiful country turns 150 this year and of course The County is celebrating in style. Wellington is starting the party early on June 30th with a BBQ, street dance, and beach fireworks, with festivities continuing on July 1st where there will be copious amounts of food, dancing, live entertainment, and a parade happening in various areas around town. If your B&B is closer to Picton, pop by their Canada Day Party on July 1st for some great BBQ, live music, and fireworks in the evening. Main Street will be shut down as of 9 AM, so come join the festivities right after breakfast.
Stop and smell the lavender at the Prince Edward County Lavender Farm the weekend of July 8th and 9th. Snap that perfect Instagram photo while strolling through their purple fields, and stay for the food and live entertainment. You’ll also have the chance to taste test lavender wine vinegar, refreshing lavender lemonade, and learn how lavender essential oil is distilled. We sometimes stop by the lavender farm on our tours (and pop into the store to get a whiff of all the lavender products). It’s a must while in The County.
Arts & Crafts is the indie music label behind the Field Trip music festival in Toronto, and they recently announced they’re coming to The County with a summer concert series held at local hotspot the Hayloft Dancehall. The Darcys played the first show in the series on June 23rd, and the next one is on July 14th with Dan Mangan. The series closes out with Reuben and the Dark on Friday August 18th. Grab your tickets here.
Between August 15th and 20th The County will be graced with some of the best smooth jazz tunes in the country from a number of talented musicians. Some of this year’s performers include the Juno and Grammy-winning saxophonist Alex Dean, pianist Laila Biali, and a number of other jazz acts. Some shows are free and some require tickets, so check out the festival’s website and grab yours before it’s too late.
And of course, don’t forget to come join us on a bicycle wine tour of Prince Edward County – we promise we’ll leave enough time for you to enjoy these events when the tours are done.
